The Destroyer #108
Bamboo Dragon

It's a jungle out there - and the Destroyer may become the next endangered species.

HOT, MOIST, DANGEROUS

Deep in the Malaysian jungle a group of scientists gets a lethal surprise, and a lone survivor rants about a prehistoric monster who eats men alive.

The survivor dies with bizarre symptoms - and CURE's Dr.Harold Smith wants answers. So Remo, his favorite problem solver, finds himself armed with a brand-new doctorate and joining an international expedition to look for the next Jurassic park.

But things heat up even more in the jungle. Who's to tell what the adventure will be, what with a sexy lady professor, the hidden agenda of expedition members, and the hot breath of something big, dangerous and undreamed of deep in the rain forest's heart.

I finally have a copy of this, the newest, and possibly worst Destroyer I have ever read. I'm on page 100. Chiun is a walking fortune cookie, Remo is a genius with a photographic memory partaking in "Sinanju training from Master Chiun." Zero satire. Zero banter between Remo and Chiun. The author knows little about Remo, and appears to have read perhaps the first few books in the series - about 15 years ago. Example: Remo shakes hands with a burly muscle type - so he "braces" himself for the handshake?!

Remo is out hunting dragons is this book. Him and Chiun have no experience with prehistoric creatures or dragons. EXCUSE ME? What about the entire book where all they did was hunt and talk about dragons?! Or when a dragon bone saved Remo's dad! Arrrgh! I'll finish it by the weekend, but I won't like it. No humor. Remo has no special attraction for women. And I liked Remo as dim as a 50 watt bulb! Now he's a friggin Einstein.

The Preliminary Reviews are In! The "lucky" people in Golden Eagle's book club had this book in their hands a couple of weeks ago. What have I heard so far? It sucks. The new author is not a Destroyer fan, and has obviously not read the books. Chiun has a menial roll, and the great Remo/Chiun interaction is gone. There is almost no humor. The villain seems to be there just so his weapons can get described in detail. The two new characters (Chiun's "mistress" and Remo's "Rice") are gone. The new author? Mike Newton, veteran of over 100 Executioner novels. So take an Executioner, change a couple of names to Smith, Remo and Chiun, and you have his idea of a "Destroyer."

Will Murray, where are you?! Warren Murphy, get your publisher in line before it kills the series!
