I believe as with most long running series, be they on tv or book form, eventually a person will run short on ideas and begin to rehash, or pass the idea on. Unfortunately most of the time the person who takes the reins has only a limited idea of what the originator wants, or what makes the characters popular. We can all hope though that the series will return to it's former glory.
